Nate (Rock Creek Six)
Published in Paperback by Zebra Books (Mass Market) (January, 1902)
Author: Lori Handeland
Average review score:

Who wouldn't enjoy seeing the evolution of male friendship?
Nate is the first of the rock creek series guys that I've read but it won't be my last. It was a great story about an extremely troubled guy surrounded by what we refer to as unconditional friendships and love. The premise was certainly original. And bringing male emotion into the forefront is certainly original.
It is written with such reality that you can feel nate's torment and every time he reaches for a bottle you hold your breath!!!
Great job, Lori.

Inspirational Romance
The Rock Creek Six are a half-dozen men with troubling, violent pasts, and only their honor among "friends" left to keep them living. When one is in need, the others are there - no reason necessary. I bought Cash first, which turned out to be the last of the series - don't you hate it when that happens! ;) - But, I fell in love with the characters and had to learn all of their stories.

I recommend you read them in order: Reese, Sullivan, Jed, Rico, Nate, and Cash.

If you read only one, Nate is my favorite choice. Primarily, because Ms. Handeland goes beyond your typical love story of a man with a troubled past who finds a woman that captures his heart and teaches him to love again. Nate is a preacher-turned-gunman who, after losing his wife and child, blames himself and loses his faith in God. A former Confederate soldier, he is an alcoholic on the verge of committing suicide when the heroine, a Christian missionary, walks through the door and quite literally turns his life up-side-down.

It's a truly touching story and has become one of my favorite romance novels of all time. Thank you Lori for an absolutely inspirational love-story... and to Lori and Linda Devlin (who wrote three of the six books) for a spectacular series. I wish there were more than six!

Nate(Rock Creek Six)
I started with Reese and read them in order. I wasn't disappointed. I really got to know the characters and couldn't wait to start the next one.
Really great reading, another can't put it down!

On a Cold Road
Published in Paperback by McClelland & Stewart (May, 1999)
Author: Dave Bidini
Average review score:

FunTo read
One of the best rock'n'roll books I have read, mainly because of the format Bidini takes. He splits the chapters between his tour diary and quotes from many rockers relating to Bidini's thoughts. Great book!

A real-life look at what it takes to be Canadian rocker
A fantastic book! If you are a fan of the band, or of Canadian music in general, you won't be able to put it down. I guarantee that after reading this book, you'll never think of the music industry in the same way again.

This book is really two books in one, blended together. First of all, it tells the story of Dave Bidini and the Canadian rock band "Rheostatics". Fans will relish all the interesting twists and turns of the band's career, while non-fans will be heading to their local music store as fast as possible to hear what these guys sound like.

Bidini's writing is intense and very personal. From the stinking tour bus to the bright lights up on the stage of Maple Leaf Gardens, you'll feel like you're right there with the band.

The second aspect of the book is a collection of interviews with Canadian musicians who led the way back in the 70's and 80's. These snapshots of life in the rock biz are the most the most honest you're likely to come across. Crazy, hilarious, heartbreaking, and sometimes disturbing, they are an invaluable historical resource for the Canadian music scene.

Buy this book, and once you've read it, go buy some Rheostatics CDs. You won't be disappointed!

I laughed, I cried, it's much better than Hammer of the Gods
Written during his band's cross-Canada tour, Bidini's stories as one of the founding members of the Rheostatics are interspersed with interviews he conducted with some of the biggest music legends of our time.

Some people start playing an instrument after they hear a great song. Bidini's book will make people want to start their own bands. Descriptions of first gigs, first band break-ups and first record deals offer amazing insight into an industry and a life that goes far beyond ghost-written rock and roll 'autobiographies' both emotionally and intellectually. Bidini is a gifted writer.

My Comfort Book
I read this book first when I was 11 years old. I was browsing through the young adult section (feeling I was at the time far above the intermediate readers area) and this title popped out of me. It was unlike any of the other books there, and I decided I needed to have it. Immediately I was drawn into the book, and after reading it the first time I knew I loved it. In the past 5 years, I've read the book several times. Each and everytime I read it, some new insight and new wisdom speaks to me. It wasn't until a few years later that I realized the parallels to the greek myth, and even now more ingenius parallels pop out at me. It is simply the most heartfelt and beautiful story I've ever read, simple, short, but even as I grow older, and pieces of classical literature 1000's of pages long fill my mind, this book continues to last as my very favorite. Of any book I've ever read, it's touched my heart more deeply and fully than anything else. Everyone should read this book.

How wonderful....
I first read this book when i was thirteen, now seven years later, i'm still reading...I've used it as a teaching book for greek mythology, i've used it as a performance dialog piece, i've used in working with grief striken teenagers...all i can say it wow...a wonderful story, full of life and wonder, with a deep meaningful stripe down the middle. any person, young or old should read this powerful novel that will tear your heart out and replace it will something wiser and better

This is a beautiful sad story.
I read this maybe two years ago and only just now (since I am taking a classical literature course) do I appreciate the parallels to the Greek myth of Orpheus. I finished the book in one night. It made me cry.

Pink Cadillac
Published in Paperback by Coral Press (July, 2001)
Author: Robert Dunn
Average review score:

A GREAT ROCK 'N' ROLL NOVEL! SO WHY AREN'T THERE MORE?
I read about 30 books a year and consider "Pink Cadillac" one of the two or three best novels (of any genre) that I've read in the last half-decade.

Author Dunn cuts through the sickeningly-sweet nostalgia to which rock's first decade has been reduced, and paints a warts-and-all portrait of Eisenhower-era Memphis: the racism and segregation, the subjugation of women, the predatory practices of the music business, the even more predatory practices of the ruling class, and--on the positive side--the energy and exuberance that made early rock 'n' roll and those who created it something truly special.

Dunn also does an excellent job of capturing the music historian's obsessive/compulsive thinking and behavior--a frame of mind that has motivated people such as I to spend our lives researching and writing scholarly treatises on what the people who created the music often disdainfully refer to as "those old things."

"Pink Cadillac" grabbed me from its opening paragraph and still hasn't let me go, some 24 hours after I finished it. Even if you don't like '50s rock 'n' roll, it won't keep you from enjoying this book. And for we who love the music of that period, Dunn's novel serves both as a triumph and as a sad reminder that good novels about rock 'n' roll have been few and far between.

Car Dreams are made on: PINK CADILLAC
Robert Dunn has given us a bittersweet story that perfectly captures a time when rhythm and blues was giving birth to rock and roll. A modern day record collector/entrepreneur, grief-sticken by his wife's sudden death, is on a healing quest to find a legendary single. He is convinced that "Pink Cadillac" is the greatest song never heard, a disc that may or may not have been recorded by a rag tag group of musical pioneers in the mid-fifties. Through flashback, the reader discovers the secret of the song, and why its origins have been kept hidden nearly half a century. The colorful characters that populate the story are in and of themselves worth the ride. Thomas "Bearcat" Jackson is a particularly vital and heartbreaking character as penned by Dunn. Bearcat is a brilliant self-taught bluesman and record man, imprisoned and haunted by the Jim Crow era into which he was born. Much to the dismay of his long time musical partners, Bearcat hooks up with two young white kids, creating a new sort of sound with their "Pink Cadillac." But was this magical tune ever actually put to wax? And what dreadful price did Bearcat and his friends pay for daring to make such music together? With "guest stars" such as Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips and Elvis himself (who provided the Cadillac the song is named for), this is a rollicking ride that will be a great read for novices and diehard music fans alike.

Fantastic
Pink Cadillac's author, Robert Dunn, knows the stuff of Memphis '55/56 -- the days of blues descending and rock rising, the roadhouses, radio stations, deejays, unscrupulous record label owners and the power of the mojo. He's taken that knowledge and transformed it into a riveting novel. I found myself reading late into the night, needing to know how Thomas 'Bearcat' Jackson's record producing career had been destroyed -- why blues singer Sonesta Clarke loved, but couldn't live with Bearcat -- if Dell Dellaplane's powerful father would smash his son's dreams by bringing down Bearcat's roadhouse -- if Daisy Holliday would ever come to her senses, forsake lounge singing in Buffalo, NY and return to Memphis. Most of all, I couldn't put the book down until the truth of the record -- Pink Cadillac -- was revealed. Had it actually ever been recorded? If so, why did it live in legend alone? Did it hold the answer to a mystery that might've been best left unsolved? Buy this book. Once you begin reading, you won't want to put it down.

Popular Music and the Underground: Foundations of Jazz, Blues, Country, and Rock, 1900-1950
Published in Paperback by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company (March, 1996)
Authors: Chuck Mancuso, Dave Lampe, Reg Gilbert, Christine Szeluga, and David Lampe
Average review score:

really shows how music started from 1900 to today
Mr. Mancuso has really integrated visualls into music through his teaching and lectures... His book is a reflection of his style. Not one book has more pictures (a lot rare) of artists and composers to show how music has grown in the last 100 years.

excellent
It is the most thorough accessment of American Popular Music I have seen. Mancuso's theory of underground inluences is a unique slant on the subject.

The ultimate look at the first 50 yrs of music available.
This is the most comprehensive look at the first half of this century of music ever put to paper. From the first jazz recording ever, to Mel Torme, to Mark Murphy...to ROY ROGERS.....it's all there!

As a reference, this book is invaluable.

Unbelievable.

Queen: The New Visual Documentary
Published in Paperback by Omnibus Press (October, 1997)
Authors: Ken Dean, Chris Charlesworth, and Kenneth Dean
Average review score:

Must Have!!
I bought this book back in 1992 when I first became a Queen fanatic. There are some great pictures and quotes, along with kind of an abbreviated history of the band. It concludes with a list of all of Queen's music releases up until 1992. It is a beautiful book that is well worth the money. You will look at it again and again.

Absolutely fab!!
This Queen book is absolutely fabulous! It is perfect in nearly every way. It is basically a visual timeline of the band, from its subtle beginnings to its flashy end (or is it?). The pictures alone are worth the price, but the ingenius quotes from band members simply makes this one of the best Queen books available. Look for Freddie in his Superman shirt!

A Rock n' Roll extravaganza for the masses.
This book brings you right along side the band and their legendary music. If you like queen, this is a must have for your library!

The Quotable Climber

Fun read!
Great collection of climbing quotes. If you're a climber, or want to try to understand someone who is; here's an interesting collection of quotes from climbers. Range from inspirational quotes, to the irreverant.

EXCELLENT
Awesome book. I recommend this book to any climber, mountaineer and outdoorsman in general. This would be THE book to have in your tent with you during incliment weather when you are tent-bound. Jonathan Waterman does an excellent job arranging the various quotes under different families and opens each chapter with a witty experience from his own adventures. This is one of my favorite books in my library. BUY IT NOW!

Hilarious!
This book is awesome. I literally read every quote in one sitting. I was either gasping in pain, laughing out loud, or in awe of the common understandings of climbers around the world. I definitley recommend the book!

R.E.M. : Talk About the Passion : An Oral History (Updated Edition)
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (September, 1998)
Author: Denise Sullivan
Average review score:

A Necessary Companion
Unlike most "rock-n-roll" books which often pander to the lowest common denominator -- which usually is the author's own personal bias barely hidden in the text and most often the lens through which we are forced to watch the history of the band/singer unfold -- Denise Sullivan gives us something better, and frankly, more fun. "TATP" offers an original and fresh perspective on a very enigmatic yet familiar college - rock - alternative - mainstream - wacky - superstar band. This book is a must-have for both the fan and fanatic. The writing is well-done, the subject matter well-handled. While almost everyone's favorite REM song and/or album may change over time, this remains my favorite book on the band.

An informative look at R.E.M.
This book was excellent. It was great to get a history of what went on by people who actually were there.Recommendwd if you are a fan of Mr. Stipe and Co. or just interested in a the history of great music that shaped a scene.

Great
You can't get much better than this -- personal accounts of people who actually were there. There is just as much information to be found here as in _It Crawled from the South_. It proceeds chronologically with great detail, and feeds the REM-fact hungry reader just what he/she wants.

Rabbit and Skunk and the Scary Rock
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (July, 1976)
Author: Carla Stevens

SOMEONE get this back in print!
This book is so wonderful - full of fun sounds, endearing characters, and a spooooky rock. Children love this - my copy is beat to a pulp, but I still pull it out for all the toddlers in my life virtually *all* of whom insist on hearing "Gruummch!" over and over. Scary Rock has never failed me. This book was such a delight to me at the age of 2 (in 1967) that I memorized the entire book including page turn cues and read it to my parents every night. Eat that, Goosebumps!

Hear! Hear!
This was one of my favorites from my childhood--wonderful book--absolutely should be back in print.

This Book needs to be BACK IN PRINT!
Deliver kids back into the days before. If you are the generation that did not suffer the turmoil of the 70's , the MTV phenomenon , or the mindless info-toon, you are the people who remember the Weekly Reader Book Club. I find myself reviewing a book I haven't seen or read for almost 40 years. What an impact this little book must have had. Give it a chance in the life of your six year old. I remember your worlds , Carla Stevens.
